You spend a vast proportion of your time at work so it makes sense to make it the best experience you can. If you are looking for a new role or looking to make the most of the time in your current job, boost your happiness in the workplace by following these 5 simple steps.
Personal Values and Culture
Consider your personal values and what is important to you and then take a good look at the culture of the organisation. For the foundation to your happiness, the culture and environment you work in needs to be a good match to your values. If you have a value of respect for example, and you work in a culture where there is little communication or acknowledgement of individuals, it will create an increasing level of dissatisfaction for you.
Clarity
To be effective you need a clear understanding of what is expected of you. Having a clear job description and objectives will ensure you and your manager are working to the same goals and expectations with equal clarity. Understanding how your targets fit in to the overall vision and goals of the organisation will give you additional motivation knowing how your work fits in to the overall plan.
Develop
Take responsibility for your own development. Stretch yourself and learn how to do things in the best way you can. Hopefully your organisation will support you with formal development, but you can still do all you can for yourself. Don’t expect others to do it all for you. Review the company’s competency framework and when you have nailed what is required for your current role, look at what is needed for the next level, stretch yourself and demonstrate a higher level of ability.
Embrace Change
One thing we can be certain of in life is that things change. Accepting change and being a positive advocate will not only make you great to be around but it will also enable you to adjust and move on faster. Refusing to accept change will just pull you down, so work out what the changes means for you, create a new vision for your future self and move on.
Be Resilient
Getting the most out of your workday requires energy and motivation. To be at your best means a good diet, getting exercise and then relaxation in down time so you can recharge. Looking after your personal wellbeing will enable you to maximise your time and enjoyment inside and outside of the work place. Building your resilience up will enable you to deal with any pressure and deadlines that come your way without sending you down the slippery slope of stress.
Your attitude and approach to life is key. Getting the right balance and taking personal responsibility for all of your interactions is what will enable you to get the best out of all areas of life.
